Salam, to fellow bloggers and readers of this self indulgence blog!
At last, our local film directors are able to heave a relieve sigh when the Government has allowed more freedom to filmmakers to highlight sensitive issues in their movies. (read here)
Gone were the days when a filmmaker had to “wage a war” with the authorities to ensure that his movie will make it to the cinema without having gone through the censorship scissors!
There is of course a strict regulation filmmakers must adhere to. Among them is that the “dark” character portrayed must either repent with their sin or die at the end of the movie. I think it does serve the whole purpose for it.
Making a movie is considered part of documenting and capturing the whole situation or conflict at that time. A filmmaker plays an important role in capturing the hearts and minds of his generation through making movies.
The late Tan Sri P. Ramlee, Satyajit Ray, Akira Kurosawa to named a few had directed plentiful movies that touches on issues pertaining to his generation, with an intention to highlight it to the public.
We cannot pinpoint our finger (or middle finger, Jose!) to moviemakers and accused them of making movies that are less intellectual or garbage as their works really portray the exact condition of our society. If we find that the movies made are that of garbage, it gives an exact impression of how the condition of the society is.
We can no longer ignore the horrifying facts about this and this, as it has gradually grasping in the minds of the future generation.
But in the end, everything will be swept under the carpet of ignorance.
