20 CENT PLASTIC BAG

by - Hesmel Faznee Faisal

FOMCA had recently questioned the Pakatan Rakyat led state government’s decision to charge a hefty 20 cent for a single plastic bag. It is a good deed taken by both of the State Government to reduce the usage of the plastic bag.

But if we look it on a different scale, this decision has led to unseen opportunities for some to make unnecessary income out of it!

I wonder where the extra 20 cents will go to. If the supermarkets are taking an advantage and making extra income from it, both the Penang and the Selangor state government will become the biggest suckers for not taking any action against it!

Let us make a simple and basic calculation. Imagine a family who had gone out on a shopping spree, decided not to bring their own shopping bag but instead pay 20 cent for the plastic bag. And now, imagine if 20-30 or even 300 families had the same feelings, wouldn’t that would only allow the supermarket to make an extra income of RM60.00, just for the darn plastic bag?

I wonder if they (who came up with this brilliant) had thought about it before or are they just doing it simply because they wanted to portray themselves as government who is concern about the environment?

I would suggest that all of the extra charges collected from the public are channeled into a special fund created to help and alleviate the poor or the unfortunate. In a way the initiative taken will help to garnish a positive image for both states Government whose reliability had been tarnished with all sorts of accusation from general public.

But as usual, as I have often said before; “Ini cuma cakap orang-orang tak berapa cerdiklah…
