Jaip drops case against nightclub performer

IPOH: The Perak Religious Department (Jaip) has dropped the case against singer Siti Noor Idayu Abd Moin for allegedly dressing sexily and encouraging vice by performing at a nightclub.

The 22-year-old singer said the department reached the decision after a meeting on Saturday.

“They decided to close the case because they did not have enough evidence to press charges,” said Siti Noor Idayu.

During the meeting, she said, the department officers advised her to dress properly in future performances.

However, the performer said she would continue to dress the way she always had.

“I don’t think the clothes that I wear are revealing or sexy.

“It’s not like I was wearing a two-piece (bikini). I still know what I can and cannot do,” she said yesterday.

The department detained Siti Noor Idayu and several others during a raid at a nightclub in Tambun on July 3.

Efforts to reach the department for comment failed.

The abovementioned news was taken from today’s The Star newspaper (7 August 2007). Before I go on further, I wish to note that there are many cases involving the “pihak berkuasa agama” and the latest is the controversial one against Siti Noor Idayu, a club singer who was detained on charge of her indecent dress according to the JAIP authorities.

What in the world was in their mind when they decided to detain this petite lady? How or what do they define the meaning of indecency dressing? There are many verses in the Quran which states on how one should dress, among the famous ones were Surah 7:26 - O children of Adam, we have provided you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness. These are some of God's signs, that they may take heed.

Which one is more vital? Of course it is important to note that what and how we wear can create sensitivity in our society but we must also realize that the righteousness is also essential in our surrounding.

We cannot judge a person just by the wear they dress. Sometimes it is also imperative for us to look into a person’s righteousness!

The morale of the people in JAIP, obviously has been shelved. Imagine when they have to drop the case and in the course of that action, it will definitely give a bad blow for the agency and at the same time will deteriorate the true teaching of Islam; that is not to humiliate another person. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I assumed these people from JAIS must have insulted this lady with lots of accusations before they apprehended her.

Sometimes, can you notice how a tudung clad “Muslimah” lady looks upon another “Muslimah” lady who doesn’t wear decent clothing (that is the tudung) and the like? It may looked like I am stereotyping women in tudung but the fact remains there. Go and check in any of the local universities and get opinions from any Muslimah from the PMI (Persatuan Mahasiswa Islam, Jose!) association. You may understand the point that I am trying to say before you jump on with accusations that says I'm an anti pompuan pakai tudung!

What has happened in this incident should become a lesson for other “pihak kuasa agama”, not to take actions in a hasten way.

Think before you take any actions. These people calls themselves Religious Authority this, Religious Authority that, but when it comes to practicing it, they never follow according to what the Quran said. Refer to Surah 49:6 - O you who believe, if a wicked person brings any news to you, you shall first investigate, lest you commit injustice towards some people, out of ignorance, then become sorry and remorseful for what you have done.

I hope, I really hope they don’t make a fun at themselves again!

ps.- What me worry?
